Heavy downpours continue through Monday, flash flooding could be a problem

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The walls of water continue to fall in and around the Charlotte region Monday.

Between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell across the foothills in the past 24 hours. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Flood Advisory for Burke, Catawba, Cleveland and Lincoln counties until 11 a.m. Monday.

Several WBTV viewers sent in photos of flooding in their neighborhoods. Click on the slideshow to see them.

Heavy rains along the U.S. 321 and Interstate 77 were reported along with some lightning.

Watauga County is under a Flash Flood Watch through Tuesday morning, according to the NWS.

WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin says anyone out and about Monday should watch out for localized flooding.

You should never try to drive your vehicle through a flooded area or roadway.

Monday's highs will be in the low to mid 70s.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (WBTV)- A judge in Forsyth County
ruled against NASCAR Driver Jeremy Mayfield in a lawsuit where a
U.S. Postal Service worker said she was attacked by a pitbull while delivering
a package to Mayfield's home.

Because Mayfield nor an
attorney representing him appeared at the hearing, the judge automatically
ruled in favor of Mary Bolten, the postal worker.

He ordered Mayfield to pay
$1 million for mental and physical injuries.

Vet visits rescued dogs, 5 more put down

MORGANTON, NC (WBTV)- Five more dogs seized by authorities Monday afternoon in
Burke County after they discovered more than 100 on a man's property have had
to be euthanized. 110 dogs in all were confiscated from the property of 58 year
old Larry Buff.

Buff has been charged with 50 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to
animals and is jailed under a $75000 bond.
The dogs were in what was described as "deplorable conditions" by animal
control officers.  Of the 110 seized,
only 75 are still alive and that number will drop say authorities.

A
veterinarian who checked the dogs Tuesday night said Wednesday he thought at
least 20 have a good chance of being adopted but says it is too early to tell
on the others. "All are infested with intestinal parasites, " said Dr. E.J.
Kennedy.  Those problems can be solved he
said but the big issue will be the socialization of the dogs.

A record amount of rainfall...and then some

A record amount of rainfall...and then some

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A strong line of thunderstorms gave the Charlotte region a record amount of rainfall Tuesday.

WBTV Meteorologist Al Conklin says the city saw 2.41 inches fall at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

The storms moved in mainly in the evening producing heavy downpours across the region. Already a quarter of an inch has fallen since midnight, Conklin said.

Storms are a threat again Wednesday, bringing more lightning, heavy downpours and the possibility for localized flooding.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg issued a Flood Advisory until 3 p.m. Wednesday for Burke, Caldwell and Alexander Counties.

Conklin says they high will be in the mid to upper 70s day before dropping into the lower 50s overnight into Thursday morning.

But once the rain moves out late Wednesday night, the rest of the week and the weekend look to be filled with sunshine and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.

“I love my dogs” says hoarding suspect

MORGANTON, NC (WBTV)- The man who had more than 100 dogs seized from his property Monday night in Burke County was charged Tuesday with 50 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

A tip led investigators to a home on Bill Epley Avenue south of Morganton Monday night.

They served an unrelated warrant of assault on 58-year-old Larry Buff and then proceeded to search the property and turned up 105 animals.

"Some are very dehydrated, others with open wounds," said Animal Control Officer Lt. Steve Massey.

Teddy Stamey of Burke County Friends for Animals said conditions were such that many of the dogs lacked any human contact at all. "Basically they lived their lives in little crates filled with mud and feces." She said the dogs were crowded together. "The crates being about two feet by four feet with four or five dogs inside."
