NC agencies questioned about how the Zahra Baker case was handled

HICKORY, NC (WBTV & AP) - The Department of Social Services for two counties in North Carolina say they investigated allegations that Zahra Baker was being improperly treated, but decided there just simply wasn't enough evidence of mistreatment.

Officials in Caldwell and Catawba counties said Monday they investigated three reports in the months before the little girl died.

The reports included allegations of improper discipline, improper care and an injurious environment.

Investigators conducted interviews with family members, but closed each case by concluding that there was no evidence of maltreatment or child safety issues.

Zahra Baker's stepmother was charged Monday with second-degree murder in her death.

Suspect's dog helps deputies find him hiding in woods

BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A Burke County man's dog actually helped police find him when he gave then the slip Friday morning, according to authorities.

The incident happened when deputies and a Drexel police officer went to Joseph Rector's home to arrest him on an outstanding assault charge.

Rector, 32, managed to hit one of the authorities on the scene and then disappeared – by climbing out a window of his home and running into nearby woods, officials said.

But, deputies found Rector's dog, Bocephus, who actually just followed deputies into woods.

The dog then helped authorities figure out where Rector was hiding: At one point, Bocephus ran off from the deputies and down a hill. When the dog came back, officers decided to follow that trail down the hill and they then found Rector.
