Damage reported as severe weather hits Charlotte region

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A string of severe storms and heavy winds that spawned tornados across the Carolinas Tuesday night, left downed trees and blown-down Christmas displays across the Charlotte-area.

Utility crews were called out to the Stallings area off of Old Monroe Road early Wednesday morning.  WBTV has learned that a tree was knocked down during the storm and blocked at least one lane of the Old Monroe Road.

WBTV has learned that work crews managed to push the tree off the road with a backhoe, which helped to reopen the roadway a short time later.

In Cabarrus County, a first-year Christmas lights display took a hit from the winds.  The Carolina Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway had displays blown over during the strong winds.

WBTV's David Whisenant went out to the Speedway and saw roofs blown off of displays in areas like the Bethlehem Village.  Several light displays were also bent during the storm.

Tornado Watch issued as heavy rains, severe weather expected

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Areas of the NC mountains have already seen an inch of rain that is part of a system bringing more heavy rain -- and that has created flash flood watches for the region.

And now the National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for parts of North and South Carolina until 10 p.m. on Tuesday night.

In the WBTV viewing area, the watch includes Burke Co., Cabarrus Co., Caldwell Co., Catawba Co., Cleveland Co., Gaston Co., Iredell Co., Lincoln Co., Mecklenburg Co., Rowan Co.,  and Union Co. in North Carolina.

In South Carolina, the watch includes Chester and Lancaster Counties.

The foothills and mountains in the WBTV viewing area are under the watch as 2 more inches of rain are possible throughout Tuesday and overnight. Heavy rain is expected in other areas, including the Piedmont, where at least an inch of rain is expected.

Man appointed attorney in case of stepdad fatally shot on Thanksgiving

By Steve Ohnesorge - bio l email

CONNELLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WBTV) - A man accused of killing his stepfather in Burke County on Thanksgiving made his first court appearance Monday morning.

Timothy Paul Bumgarner was in court Monday morning in Morganton to face a murder charge in the death of Filiberto Rubio. The 28-year-old has been held with no bond since the shooting on Thanksgiving.

On Monday morning, Bumgarner was given a court appointed attorney.

Investigators say witnesses told them that Bumgarner and Rubio had been drinking and then started arguing. The dispute escalated to the shooting.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office says officers arrived at the scene to find Rubio dead on the back deck of the home. Bumgarner had left the scene but later emerged from a wooded area and surrendered.

Attorney General urges shoppers to check toy recalls, gift card rules, refund policies

NORTH CAROLINA - Many North Carolina shoppers plan to start their holiday shopping as soon as the stores open after Thanksgiving, and Attorney General Cooper has urged them to take steps to avoid common problems such as unsafe toys, gifts that can’t be returned, and gift cards that can’t be used.

“Before you start your hunt for holiday gifts, find out the rules about gift cards and refunds to avoid potential headaches,” Cooper said. “Parents can also learn how to find out which toys, games and gadgets make safe gifts for kids.”

97-year-old woman volunteers at daycare

MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) - With the soft patience that often comes with old age, Minnie Murphy sits and guides her 3 and 4 year old students.

Mee-Maw is what the kids at Generations Child Care call the 97-year-old woman. She started volunteering her time 11 years ago and refuses to retire.

"I've tried to quit 3 times," says Minnie. But the sweet smiling faces always bring her back. She's not afraid to admit it's somewhat of an addiction.

"Mee-Maw" helps with every task in the classroom, from instruction to passing out breakfast and lunch.

She's always home by 12:30 though, just in time for her soap operas. Each time she picks up her coat to leave the classroom for the day, she's followed with hugs and urged to hurry back.
