Public schools pledge to raise expectations for low-income students

BURKE COUNTY - Burke County Public Schools has become a member of the College Board’s CollegeKeys Compact.

The Compact seeks to support students from low-income families as they work toward preparing for, getting into and succeeding in college.  Burke County is one of more than 550 institutions to join this bold call to action to U.S. schools and colleges issued by the College Board.

Membership is based upon dedication and commitment as there is no financial cost.

Pledging to overcome the multiple obstacles facing students from low-income backgrounds, Dr. Art Stellar, Superintendent of Schools explained the district’s eagerness to participate in this initiative.

“Students will perform up to the level of expectations of their teachers and parents.  When we raise the expectations, young people will respond by rising to higher standards,” stated Dr. Art Stellar.
