Troopers say a Morganton man was killed after being hit by a tractor trailer truck early Friday morning along a major interstate.
According to the Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Stephen Thomas Barker was driving along Interstate 40 around 1 a.m. Friday morning near exit 112 in Valdese.
That's when Barker's vehicle hit a patch of ice and he lost control.
The car spun around in the interstate, bounced off the guardrail and stopped in the middle of the interstate with no lights on.
That's when troopers say Barker's vehicle was t-boned by an 18-wheel truck. The driver reportedly didn't see Barker's vehicle until it was too late.
Barker died as a result of the collision.
The deadly crash shut down one side of I-40 for a while early Friday morning. The eastbound side of I-40 was shut down for about two hours.
The roadway has since reopened.
