Who wants to Go Pro with Steve Smith?

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

Volunteers needed for 2013 Unifour Senior Games

The Unifour Senior Games, an athletic and artistic event for seniors 55 years of age and better in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties, is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the 2013 Unifour Senior Games.

The 29th Annual games began on April 19, and run through through May 17, at locations throughout the Greater Hickory Metro.

Over 800 area seniors are participating in this year’s Games. Senior Games events include track and field, tennis, bowling, table tennis, swimming, billiards, and many more.

Volunteers are especially needed on Monday, May 6 at the Highland Recreation Center in Hickory for opening ceremonies, spincasting, softball throw, football throw, and basketball shooting events.

Volunteers are also needed on Monday, May 13, at Lenoir-Rhyne University for track and field events.

Puddingstone at the Old Rock School in Valdese

Puddingstone at the Old Rock School in Valdese

The Old Rock School in Valdese will host Puddingstone on March 16, beginning at 7 p.m. with a special appearance by the St. Joseph Irish Dancers.

Puddingstone formed first as a trio, consisting of percussion, hammered dulcimer, harp and flutes. Puddingstone meaning a conglomerate of many different stones, characterizes the numerous genres played by the group including, Americana, Celtic, folk, New Age, Flamenco, Renaissance and many more. Puddingstone has been described as the “fine wine of Celtic and folk music”. Combinations of ancient and acoustic instruments with electronic instruments are what give Puddingstone their signature sound.

The band consists of members David Abernethy, Mike Willis, Denise Easter-Yoder, Paul Holt, Suzanne Williams, and Patrick Crouch.

David, founder and producer of Puddingstone, received his early music training as a percussionist with the award winning Lenoir High School Band.

USO of NC names Jeff Byers as Ambassador

The USO of NC, the leading organization responsible for lifting the spirits of troops and their families in North Carolina announced Thursday that Jeff Byers, a center for the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League, as their ambassador.

“As a child I remember looking up to soldiers with admiration, thinking of how honorable they were for their service to our country,” said Byers. “I've never lost the appreciation for their sacrifice and am grateful I can finally give back through the USO of NC. It's an honor to be part of such a selfless organization, and serve our troops for all they've given to protect our nation and our freedoms.”

Byers entered the NFL in 2010 and signed with the Carolinas Panthers in 2011.

Local woman graduates basic training at Air Force Base in Texas

Air Force Airman Kailie H. Benfield graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Benfield is the daughter of Douglas Benfield of Johns River Loop, Morganton, and sister of Ronnie Benfield of Stallion Drive, Jacksonville.

She is a 2011 graduate of Freedom High School, Morganton.

Hickory Young Professionals Top 10 Under 40 asking for nominations

Martin Starnes & Associates, CPAs P.A and The Hickory Young Professionals are asking community members to consider fellow citizens who are under 40 years of age, as of November 1, to nominate for the Top 10 Under 40 recognition.

Nominees must be employed in and reside in Catawba, Caldwell, Burke or Alexander County, and must be involved in activities outside of work.

All nominations will be reviewed by a Catawba County Chamber of Commerce selected group of non-eligible community leaders.
