Rescue group blocks black cat adoptions for Halloween

MORGANTON, NC  (WBTV) – The Cat's Cradle rescue group did not allow any of their black cats to be adopted during the month of October as Halloween approached.

"We just could not take the chance," said Lynda Garibaldi, who founded the foster care program in Burke County.

"Many people associate cats with witchcraft and witches and things can happen around Halloween," she said.

The group has dozens of black cats in foster homes across western North Carolina. Normally the group puts adoptable animals on display at area stores but during October it was limited to cats that were not black.

Animal Control officer Lt. Steve Massey said there have been cases of cruelty in the past and is not an every year occurrence "But it happens."

Strange animal scaring folks in Burke County

GLEN ALPINE, N.C. (AP) - Children are being kept off the playground at a school west of Morganton after police and neighbors spotted signs of a large animal prowling in a wooded area nearby.

Police have set up leg traps behind Glen Alpine Elementary and are trying to bait the animal with deer carcasses.

Neighbors told police they hear "bloodcurdling" cries at night.

Tracks found near the school and nighttime sightings by police using infrared visual equipment indicate the animal could be a large cat weighing 80 pounds or more.

Parents have been notified.

Parent Kelly Lingafelt said she was warned by police to be careful while walking with friends Thursday.
